Enjoy a leisure morning and in the afternoon you will discover 'Levada' is a Portuguese word that derives from 'levar', which means to carry and is very loosely interpreted as 'carriageway'. A more correct translation would be mini-canal. The levadas were originally created in the 16th Century to bring water from the rainy northern aspect of the island to the sun soaked south where crops such as sugar, bananas and grapes grow. You will have a magnificent walk along the levada of Serra do Faial which is over one hundred years old. Starting in Vale do Paraíso and finishing in Rochão. Along the way you'll see cultivated terraces, spectacular gardens and beautiful views over the village of Camacha. A wonderful stroll that will make worth your holiday on the island. Return to your hotel and prepare for a fun evening of Folklore at a Typical Madeira Restaurant with the Madeira Typical 'espetada'.
